Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
Systems that assist or intervene in driving: automatic braking, lane keeping, blind spot warning, adaptive cruise. Increasingly standard, and they change what repair costs.
ADAS covers the sensors and software that warn a driver or act on their behalf. Cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors feed systems that brake, steer or alert.
Two consequences reach the fleet directly. Repair cost rises, because a bumper or a windshield now carries sensors that require calibration after replacement, and a shop without that capability sends the work out. And upfitting gets harder, since equipment mounted on a patrol vehicle or a service truck can obstruct a sensor, which is a reason to settle sensor placement in the specification rather than at the installer.
The safety case is real, and it is worth measuring rather than assuming, because these systems also generate new failure modes and new driver behaviors.
