Ward Apparatus designs and builds custom fire and rescue vehicles in Horseheads, New York, in a part of Chemung County once known as the fire engine capital of the United States. The company acquired Maintainer Custom Bodies in January 2021 and returned fire truck manufacturing to the area after a 35 year absence. MCB itself traces back to Iowa in 1976 and merged with Maintainer Group of Iowa in 2015. The lineup covers rescue, quick attack, super squad, mini pumper, UTV and specialty apparatus, with departments choosing chassis, body style and drive train along with compartments, storage, equipment, lighting, graphics and cab options. Ward works through body layout, compartment access, chassis requirements, storage needs and long term serviceability with each customer before the build begins. The company also lists featured ready build configurations on chassis such as the Ford F-550 4×4 and Ram 3500 4×4 for departments trying to shorten planning and build timelines.
