How this is calculated

This tool finds a vehicle's economic service life: the ownership year where its all-in annual cost bottoms out. Early on, a vehicle carries high capital cost; late in life, rising maintenance takes over. The lowest point between those two curves is the cheapest time to replace, and every year past it costs more than running a unit on the optimal cycle.

  • Method: equivalent-annual-cost analysis, the approach used in public-agency equipment life-cycle studies, including U.S. DOT-published research.
  • Your numbers: the curve is anchored to the price, age, and maintenance cost you enter, with class-based planning assumptions for how maintenance rises and value declines over time.
  • Benchmarks: the fleet comparisons come from real public fleets' own adopted replacement policies, verified from the public record and presented by fleet size rather than by name; the federal figures come from the GSA minimum replacement standards (41 CFR 102-34.270), which are a keep-floor for federal fleets rather than a target.

These are planning estimates to support budget and replacement conversations, not a substitute for a lifecycle analysis run on your own fleet's cost records. Defaults are accepted industry planning figures; adjust your inputs to match your fleet's actual history.
