PL Custom Emergency Vehicles has designed and manufactured emergency vehicles since 1946, when Martin V. Smock founded the company in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey. Now based in Manasquan and still family owned under Smock’s daughter Deborah Smock Thomson, PL Custom builds Type I Classic and Type III Medallion ambulances, the medium duty Titan, rescue vehicles under the Rescue 1 name, conversion vehicles, and body remounts, with standard stock units available. The company grew from three ambulances a year with seven employees when the family bought the business in 1970, and much of its management team and staff have been with the company more than 20 years. PL Custom is an awarded Sourcewell vendor, which carries no fees or purchase obligation for member departments.
