Cutaway Bus
A bus body built onto a van or truck chassis. The common vehicle for shuttles, circulators and paratransit, cheaper and shorter-lived than a heavy-duty bus.
A cutaway takes a commercial van or truck chassis, cuts it off behind the cab, and mounts a purpose-built body on the back. It is the standard answer where a full heavy-duty transit bus is too large or too expensive.
The cost and the service life are both roughly half the heavy-duty case, which is the point and also the catch: a cutaway is cheaper to buy and does not last nearly as long, so a fleet substituting cutaways for heavy-duty buses is choosing a shorter replacement cycle rather than avoiding one.
The maintenance quirk is the seam. It is two products joined together, so warranty and responsibility divide between the chassis manufacturer and the body builder, and problems at the interface, particularly wiring, are where a shop spends its time.
