How this is calculated

Gallons are miles divided by MPG, times your vehicle count; dollars are gallons times the price. MPG defaults come from federal fuel-economy data: the U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center figures and Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Transportation Energy Data Book. Where those two federal sources differ, the Careful and Hopeful stances use the lower and higher figure and Middle splits them; where only one figure exists, the stance does not change it and the tool says so. The default price is the national average from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), updated weekly, with its date shown. Your own MPG and price always beat the defaults.

These are planning estimates to support budget conversations, not a fuel bid or a guarantee. Your fuel-card history is the sharpest input; type it in wherever you have it.
