LAPD Patrol Vehicles Get Upgraded Sirens Drivers Can Feel
Los Angeles police cars are being equipped with siren systems designed to reach drivers through vibration, not just sound.

The Los Angeles Police Department is retrofitting its patrol fleet with the Federal Signal Rumbler, a low-frequency siren that alerts drivers through infrasonic pressure waves felt through a vehicle’s structure and the road surface, not through sound alone.
The Rumbler integrates with light-and-siren controllers already installed in LAPD vehicles rather than replacing them, which removes a compatibility barrier that has slowed similar retrofits at other agencies.
The system targets a specific operational problem: modern cabin insulation, noise-canceling headphones and loud audio systems can delay a driver’s awareness of an approaching emergency vehicle long enough that it has already entered the intersection before the driver reacts. The low-frequency output is designed to close that gap.
LAPD has not disclosed a completion timeline for the full fleet rollout or the contract value. Coordinating installation across a fleet of that size requires scheduling fleet maintenance, the vendor and patrol operations to limit out-of-service time per unit.
Earlier deployments of low-frequency siren technology have drawn resident complaints about building vibration and physical discomfort in corridors with heavy emergency traffic. How LAPD manages public communication around the rollout will affect whether the upgrade stays routine.
LAPD operates one of the largest municipal police fleets in the country. The scale of the Los Angeles deployment will produce what is likely the largest real-world performance dataset on the Federal Rumbler yet assembled outside a controlled test environment.
The department has not announced when the retrofit program is expected to reach full fleet coverage.
