After Audit Alleges Misconduct and Misuse, Erie County Drafts New Fleet Reform

Erie County, N.Y., is drafting a countywide fleet policy covering all 1,200 county-owned and leased vehicles after audits found employee misuse, abuse and rising unchallenged costs across county departments.
The county spends about $10 million a year on its vehicle fleet. Legislators said the scale of that expenditure, combined with negative audit findings over the past two years, prompted them to act.
The Erie County Legislature is taking the rare step of writing the policy itself rather than leaving it to the executive branch, applying the new rules to every county official, office and department.
Majority Leader John Mills, R-Orchard Park, and Legislator Frank Todaro, R-Lancaster, have both been involved in shaping the Legislature’s approach to the revised policy.
