Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)
A vehicle combining an engine with an electric motor and a small battery charged by the engine and by braking. It does not plug in.
A conventional hybrid recovers energy under braking and uses an electric motor to assist the engine. It never connects to the grid, so it needs no charging infrastructure at all.
That absence of infrastructure is the reason hybrids remain a practical fleet choice where full electrification is not yet workable: no service upgrade, no chargers, no depot changes, and a real fuel reduction in stop-start municipal driving, which is exactly the duty cycle hybrids suit best. Patrol and inspection work with heavy low-speed running tends to benefit most.
