Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
A hybrid with a battery large enough to charge from the grid and run on electricity alone for a limited range, then continue on its engine.
A plug-in hybrid has both an engine and a grid-chargeable battery. Short trips can run electric; longer ones fall back to fuel, so there is no range limit to plan around.
That makes it attractive to public fleets with mixed or unpredictable duty cycles, and it comes with a catch worth knowing before the savings are claimed: the benefit only materializes if the vehicle is actually plugged in. A plug-in hybrid that nobody charges is a heavier, more expensive conventional vehicle. Fleets that report real savings from them are the ones that measured charging behavior rather than assuming it.
