Over-the-Air Update (OTA)
Vehicle software updated remotely rather than at the shop. Convenient, and it introduces a change a fleet did not schedule.
Over-the-air updating lets a manufacturer change vehicle software without the vehicle visiting a facility, covering anything from infotainment to powertrain and driver assistance behavior.
For a fleet the useful reframing is that vehicle behavior is now versioned. A unit can behave differently after an update than before it, which matters when diagnosing an intermittent fault, and it means two apparently identical vehicles may not be running the same software. Knowing whether updates are automatic or controllable, and keeping a record of when they land, is worth establishing at purchase rather than during a mystery.
