Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)
Methane captured from landfills, wastewater treatment or digesters and cleaned to pipeline quality. Chemically interchangeable with fossil natural gas in the same vehicles.
Renewable natural gas is captured from decomposing organic material rather than extracted, then processed until it can be used exactly like conventional natural gas. Existing CNG vehicles and stations need no modification.
The public-sector interest is often circular in a literal sense: the same jurisdiction may run the landfill or the wastewater plant producing the gas and the refuse fleet consuming it. That closes a loop a commercial fleet cannot, and it makes RNG a recurring feature of municipal climate plans.
The emissions accounting is where care is needed, since treatment varies by program and by jurisdiction, and how the reduction is credited is a question for whoever owns the inventory rather than for the fleet.
