Emissions Inventory
An accounting of the emissions a fleet produces, usually derived from fuel consumed. Often required by a jurisdiction climate commitment rather than by the fleet.
A fleet emissions inventory converts fuel consumption into emissions using published factors. Because it is calculated from fuel rather than measured at the tailpipe, the inventory is only as good as the fuel records, which puts fuel management upstream of climate reporting in a way that is rarely noticed until the first report is attempted.
The obligation usually originates outside the fleet. A jurisdiction adopts a climate action plan or a reduction target, and the fleet becomes a reporting unit within it, often with a share of the target attached. That means the audience is a sustainability office and a governing body rather than a fleet audience, and the framing has to suit them.
The useful contribution a fleet manager can make is honesty about what is achievable and when. Reduction pathways depend on replacement cycles that are already scheduled and largely fixed: a fleet cannot decarbonize faster than it replaces vehicles without abandoning assets it has not finished paying for. Setting that out early is much better received than discovering it against a target already adopted.
Scope questions matter for comparability. Whether the inventory covers only fleet fuel, or also contracted services, employee travel and off-road equipment, changes the number substantially, and two jurisdictions reporting fleet emissions are often not counting the same things.
