Geotab’s GO9 device family now handles three diagnostic protocols, J1939, J1979 and J1979-2, within a single Clean Truck Check workflow after the California Air Resources Board certified Geotab’s J1979-2 integration for its compliance solution.
The GO9 automatically detects which protocol an eligible heavy-duty truck uses and collects and transmits the required emissions data without manual setting changes or an added tool, according to Geotab’s announcement. The company said the integration is among the first fully embedded telematics implementations of J1979-2 available to customers. “By embedding J1979-2 into its Clean Truck Check solution, Geotab empowers fleets operating in California to streamline compliance processes, reduce administrative burden and minimize unnecessary vehicle downtime,” the company said in its announcement.
The California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) Heavy-Duty Inspection and Maintenance (HD I/M) program, commonly called Clean Truck Check, covers heavy-duty vehicles operating in California, including trucks registered in other states. Geotab’s certification lets fleets collect and transmit the required emissions data through the telematics platform they already use for Clean Truck Check, replacing manual data gathering that can take vehicles out of service.
J1979-2 provides more standardized and secure access to vehicle emissions data from compliant telematics devices than earlier protocols. Geotab said fleets running a mixed protocol population, trucks using J1939, older J1979 or the newer J1979-2, can run the same device and the same workflow across the entire group.
Geotab said its platform serves more than 100,000 customers, ranging from small and mid-size fleets to Fortune 500 enterprises and public-sector organizations including the U.S. federal government, and connects approximately 6 million vehicles and assets while processing 100 billion data points daily. The company holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022, SOC2, FIPS 140-3 and FedRAMP authorizations.
