Fuel fraud and misuse can drain as much as 12% of a business’s total fuel spend, according to the National Association of Fleet Managers, and traditional card controls paired with telematics have not closed the gap on their own. WEX (NYSE: WEX), headquartered in Portland, Maine, announced the general availability of SecureFuel, an AI-powered fraud detection tool for commercial fleet operators, with a rollout to eligible customers scheduled to begin August 3.
SecureFuel draws on WEX’s closed-loop acceptance network, which covers approximately 95% of U.S. fuel stations and captures purchase-level detail including fuel quantity, fuel type and merchant location. The tool combines that transaction data with telematics feeds and WEX-built AI-powered fraud models to flag potentially unauthorized purchases before they are approved, with the stated goal of reducing false positives alongside fraudulent approvals.
“Fraud prevention is only as strong as the information behind each decision,” said Carlos Carriedo, chief operating officer, Americas Payments and Mobility at WEX. “SecureFuel gives us a more complete view of each purchase, assisting customers stop unauthorized transactions without creating unnecessary disruption for drivers. This capability is especially important in today’s volatile fuel price market.”
Fleet managers can activate SecureFuel inside the WEXOnline platform using telematics from WEX directly or through supported third-party providers. WEX holds Geotab Premier Partner status, so fleets already running Geotab can connect their existing vehicle data to SecureFuel without a separate integration. Fleets without telematics can procure a supported solution through WEX, consolidating payments, vehicle connectivity and fraud detection under one provider.
WEX processes approximately 30 million fleet transactions each month, and SecureFuel extends more than 40 years of fleet card controls and approximately a decade of telematics-based fraud work the company developed in its over-the-road business to a broader range of commercial fleet customers across its mobility portfolio.
At the third annual WEX North American Mobility Summit in Portland, where SecureFuel’s general availability was announced, WEX also previewed Actionable Insights, a separate AI-driven feature currently in beta that surfaces savings opportunities and operational recommendations from transaction, fleet and payment data. WEX described both SecureFuel and Actionable Insights as the first products in a broader portfolio of intelligence-driven fleet capabilities. Risk factors for the offerings are detailed in WEX’s Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on February 4, 2026, and in its Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, filed July 22, 2026, as well as subsequent SEC filings.
