The Kansas Department of Transportation has launched a Plow Locations Tool on KanDrive.gov that refreshes each snowplow’s position every 60 seconds and shows dashcam images from 12 of the state’s trucks.
“We’re committed to providing Kansans with timely and reliable information during winter weather events,” Secretary Calvin Reed said. “This new tool helps travelers see where crews are actively working while also providing a better understanding of the effort required to keep highways open and safe during a storm.”
The tool is accessible at KanDrive.gov and through the KanDrive app, which the agency describes as a around-the-clock resource for highway and weather conditions. Users reach it through the “What are you Looking for?” box at the top left of the page and then select the orange Plow Locations Tool option. The map displays each active plow as an orange arrow icon that indicates direction of travel and shows the path the truck has taken over the previous two hours.
The 12 trucks equipped with cameras appear separately as blue truck icons. Clicking one pulls up that unit’s most recent dashcam images. “Behind every plow shown on the map is a KDOT employee working to improve travel conditions,” Reed said. “This tool gives the public a real-time view of that work and another resource to help them make informed travel decisions.”
Kansas Department of Transportation maintains about 9,500 miles of state highways totaling more than 25,000 total lane and ramp miles. The agency runs a statewide fleet of about 590 dump trucks and eight tow plows, each capable of clearing a path up to 24 feet wide. During storm operations, crews prioritize high-volume highways while continuing to work lower-volume routes.
