The Michigan State Police Precision Driving Unit has posted preliminary results from its 2027 model year Police Vehicle Evaluation Program, covering acceleration, top speed, braking and road-course lap times for 13 patrol vehicles and four police motorcycles.
MSP notes that the results update as testing data is entered, and both Chevrolet Silverado PPV pickups, the Z7X and the Z71, are still listed as to be announced in every test. The figures in this story reflect the preliminary results as posted Oct. 5.
The 2027 group is built around police utility vehicles and pickups. Modern Public Fleet grouped the patrol vehicles by class below and names the category leaders in each; the charts that follow show every result. Lap times are four-driver averages, calculated by Modern Public Fleet from MSP’s preliminary five-lap times using the scoring method described in MSP’s 2026 test book.
Mid-size police utility vehicles
The class includes Ford’s Police Interceptor Utility in all three of its powertrains, the 3.3L hybrid, which Ford listed as the standard powertrain in MSP’s 2026 book, the 3.3L V6 and the optional 3.0L EcoBoost; the Dodge Durango Pursuit with its 5.7L HEMI V8 and 3.6L V6; and two electric patrol vehicles, Chevrolet’s Blazer EV PPV and Ford’s Mustang Mach-E GT eAWD.
The 3.0L EcoBoost Police Interceptor Utility led the class, and the full test, in top speed at 148 mph and in lap average at 1:34.69, with the best five-lap average for all four test drivers. The Mach-E led the class, and all patrol vehicles, in acceleration, reaching 60 mph in 4.01 seconds and 100 mph in 10.41 seconds, and in braking, with a projected stop of 123.12 feet from 60 mph. It also turned the single fastest lap of the test, 1:33.11.
Among the gas and hybrid utilities, the 3.0L EcoBoost Police Interceptor Utility was quickest to 60 mph, at 6.26 seconds, and the Police Interceptor Utility hybrid had the shortest projected stop, 129.60 feet.
Full-size police SUVs
Chevrolet’s Tahoe PPV, the only full-size utility in the group, ran with the 5.3L engine in rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions. The rear-wheel-drive Tahoe led in every category: 7.87 seconds to 60 mph, a 130 mph top speed, a projected stop of 129.74 feet and a lap average of 1:37.88.
Ford’s full-size Expedition Police Responder, a 2028 model, is not part of the 2027 test group.
Pickups
Among the pickups with results posted, Ford’s F-150 Police Responder 3.5L EcoBoost 4WD led every category. It was the quickest gas-powered vehicle to 60 mph in the full test, at 5.94 seconds, reached 100 mph in 14.00 seconds, topped out at 121 mph, projected to stop in 148.22 feet and posted a lap average of 1:38.86.
Results for Chevrolet’s two Silverado PPV pickups are still pending. The Z7X adds a 2-inch lift that, according to Chevrolet’s description in the 2026 book, keeps its pursuit-capable rating. The heavy-duty Ram 2500 6.4L 4WD is the group’s only three-quarter-ton pickup.
Sedans
No sedan is in the 2027 test group. The 2026 group did not include one either.
Motorcycles
The BMW RTP 1300 with automatic shift led in acceleration, reaching 60 mph in 3.52 seconds and 100 mph in 7.98 seconds, and in braking, with a projected stop of 135.84 feet. The standard BMW RTP 1300 posted the highest motorcycle top speed, 139 mph.

What the full report will add
MSP has not announced a date for the full 2027 test book. Based on when recent editions have come out, Modern Public Fleet expects it early next year. If it follows the 2026 edition, the book will include:
- Photos and police package descriptions for each vehicle, with highlights supplied by the manufacturers
- Complete acceleration data, including 0-80 mph times and the distance each vehicle needs to reach its top speed
- Results from each vehicle’s 20 anti-lock brake stops from 60 mph, run by two drivers
- Ergonomics scores, in which at least four officers rate each vehicle’s comfort, convenience, instrumentation and visibility on a 1-10 scale
- Communications scores from Michigan Public Safety Communications System personnel, who rate how difficult it is to install radio and emergency equipment
- EPA fuel economy estimates supplied by the manufacturers
- Full motorcycle data and a one-page performance overview comparing every vehicle
The book also restates the performance criteria attached to MSP’s own purchasing specifications. According to the 2026 edition, a patrol vehicle has historically had to reach 60 mph in 9.0 seconds, 80 mph in 14.9 seconds and 100 mph in 24.6 seconds; average 25.79 feet per second squared of deceleration over 20 stops from 60 mph; and complete all 32 laps of the Grattan Raceway dynamics test without a major component failure. MSP notes that meeting those criteria does not certify a vehicle as pursuit rated and that each agency must decide whether a vehicle suits its own mission.
In the 2026 program, MSP ran the acceleration, top speed and braking tests at the Chelsea Proving Grounds in Chelsea, Michigan, and the dynamics test at Grattan Raceway in Belding, Michigan. The 2025 and 2026 books are available on MSP’s police vehicle test results page.
Modern Public Fleet will cover the full 2027 report in detail when MSP releases it and will update these results as testing continues, including the Silverado PPV numbers.
