Board denies request to invalidate Motive’s AI fleet technology patent

A US Patent and Trademark Office tribunal declined to invalidate an AI-based fleet tracking patent held by Motive Technologies Inc., leaving the intellectual property intact as broader litigation between two competing fleet telematics vendors continues.
The Patent Trial and Appeal Board ruled Wednesday that one prior patent application and three papers do not render US Patent No. 11,875,580 unpatentable. The patent covers an AI-based fleet tracking system that Samsara Inc. is accused of infringing.
The ruling is one front in a wider legal fight between the two companies that also includes an International Trade Commission investigation and two federal lawsuits. Motive sued Samsara in 2024, accusing its rival of engaging in industrial espionage to steal and copy AI technology used to enhance its fleet tracking system.
The litigation between the two vendors is ongoing across those separate proceedings.
