U.S. Patent No. 12,700,758 B2, covering systems and methods for dynamic roadway charging, has been issued to HEVO Inc., the Brooklyn, New York, wireless charging developer, with a filing date of Oct. 17, 2022, and priority to a provisional application filed Oct. 18, 2021.
The patented technology enables continuous wireless charging of electric vehicles while in motion. A series of charging pads positioned along the roadway each contain a transmitter that transfers electrical power to a receiver mounted on the vehicle as it travels. A power station placed adjacent to the roadway and communicatively coupled to the pads includes an inverter that moves power from a source to the pad array, with the pads collectively configured so that vehicle receivers receive power continuously as the vehicles move.
Adjacent pads can also wirelessly transfer power between one another. The system supports bidirectional power flow, allowing stored energy to move from vehicles back to the roadway infrastructure or grid. The patent further covers layered pad constructions that incorporate cabling, magnetic components, power electronics and cooling elements, along with integration options for fixed power stations, mobile charging depots and rechargeable batteries positioned adjacent to the roadway.
“The ability to deliver continuous power to electric and autonomous vehicles while they are in motion is fundamental to reducing range anxiety, improving fleet utilization and enabling the next generation of automated mobility.” said Jeremy McCool, Founder and CEO of HEVO. “This technology strengthens the foundation of our Rezonant hardware and Journey platform as we advance commercial deployments of both stationary and in-road wireless charging solutions.”
The five inventors listed on the patent are Jeremy McCool, Umer Anwer, Kerim Colak, Kunal Kamle and Luke Mansfield, all of Brooklyn, New York. The patent was assigned to HEVO Inc.
HEVO positions the issuance within its existing product lines. The company’s Rezonant wireless charging hardware and Journey software platform are UL-certified and SAE-qualified for stationary applications; the dynamic roadway patent is designed to complement those systems in fleet depot, logistics and roadway infrastructure programs.
“This patent issuance represents an important expansion of HEVO’s intellectual property portfolio in dynamic wireless charging,” McCool said. Commercial and press inquiries can be directed to HEVO through its website at HEVO.com.
