Seat belt non-compliance and chronic speeding, documented in more than 7 million dashcam videos, drove Verizon Connect to add new AI tags and expanded storage to its Integrated Video platform in Q2 2023.

“Video is a transformational medium for fleets, boosting operations as well as driver safety. Our research and ongoing enhancements to Verizon Connect’s Integrated Video are part of our commitment to provide our customers with a best-in-class experience when it comes to fleet management,” said Lisa Donnelly, Associate Director of Product Management at Verizon Connect. She added that the enhancements “will provide greater actionable insights and the ability to improve coaching for drivers, which we know is key for our customers.”

The underlying data comes from May 2023 research by Verizon Connect’s Data Science Team, which analyzed more than 7 million videos from the company’s own dashcam footage. That research found drivers operating without a fastened seat belt in one of every ten events captured, a rate the study ties to a broader fatality pattern: 64% of trucking drivers killed in automobile accidents were not wearing seat belts. The same dataset showed 40% of all videos captured a vehicle exceeding the posted speed limit.

The Q2 2023 enhancements add two new AI tags to the Cloud AI Video Analytics Engine: one for speeding events and one for unfastened seat belt detection. The Cloud AI engine already labeled tailgating, rolling stop and phone distraction alongside severity scores; the two new tags extend that classification so fleet managers can sort and prioritize coaching opportunities without scrubbing through raw footage.

The release also introduces Camera Health, a diagnostic feature for Integrated Video customers that surfaces dashcam hardware problems and provides self-remediation steps to resolve them. Verizon Connect said the tool is intended to reduce camera downtime and help customers address common issues without a shop visit.

On storage, Verizon Connect added a 256 GB SD card option for its AI Dashcam. The larger card supports approximately 170 recording hours on a road-facing camera and 115 hours on a dual-camera setup. The company said the expanded capacity is designed for vehicles that operate outside network coverage for extended periods, where on-device retention is the primary means of preserving footage for insurance claims, road-rage documentation or incident review.

Verizon Connect earned 11 industry awards in 2022, including a No. 1 ranking in innovation by Inc., according to the company.
